In vitro models traditionally fail to capture accurately specific product effects at low doses. By adhering to ex vivo simulation principles and leveraging robust automation, the SIFR technology reaches accuracy at doses as low as 0.5 g/d fibre and below. At daily doses of 0.5 and 0.75 g, Bimuno® GOS stimulated SCFA production, and impacted colonic pH as well as various bacterial taxa.
Furthermore, by properly simulating the gut microbiome ecosystem ex vivo, the SIFR technology captures more bacterial taxa that are impacted by products; in this case, it expanded previous in vitro data, providing new insights into the specific stimulation by GOS of Lachnospiraceae and Acutalibacteriaceae.
Last, in this kinetic implementation of the SIFR technology, cross-feeding interactions could be simulated across the colonic transit time, providing more granularity into the mechanism of action.
